The concept of fast fashion is relatively new to the industry. Companies are beginning to manufacture cheaply made clothes for low prices that increase pollution. This massive amount of clothes being discarded on a daily basis has impacted our environment immensely and contributes to climate change.
Many popular brands contribute to the issues of fast fashion, with H&M, Urban Outfitters, Aéropostale, and Shein as prominent, but only a few, examples. Why is there so much clothing being thrown away instead of being donated and why do we still buy more cheap clothing instead of thrifting better quality clothing? This is because consumers never feel they have enough and always want more; the thrill of buying new clothes ignores that this industry is killing the planet.
Not only do these brands contribute to climate change, they contribute to child labour. Child labour is a serious issue in the fast fashion industry. They have children working extreme hours only to get paid less than a dollar per day. These companies usually produce their clothes in third world countries, which shows how these major companies are taking advantage and profiting off of these people living in poverty. By giving these workers barely any money, they are keeping those countries poor so that the people depend on their work. Next time you’re shopping for clothes, think about the brands you buy from, and the impact of one seemingly harmless purchase.
