On the weekend of September 6th and 7th, the final championship games of the US Open were hosted in Arthur Ashe Stadium, in Queens, New York.
On September 7th, Carlos Alcaraz won the US Open Men’s singles championship against Jannik Sinner. The match went on for almost three hours of intense gameplay, Alcaraz’s well-placed shots and adaptability won him three out of four sets.
Carlos Alcaraz is currently ranked number one in the world, representing his birth country, Spain. Sinner follows close behind holding the number two title, representing Italy.
This is Alcaraz’s second US Open title, with his first in 2022. In total, according to ESPN, Alcaraz holds 23 career titles across the ATP (the official international circuit in tennis, with over 55 different tournaments) men’s singles.
In Women’s singles, Arnya Sabalenka won against Amanda Anisimova after a tiebreaker on September 6th. Utilizing her killer forehand and mental strength, she beat one of her greatest opponents. The match lasted an hour and thirty minutes.
Sabalenka currently holds first place in the women’s division. She has 21 titles in singles, and 6 doubles titles.
The prize pool for the event was over $90 million, according to the official US Open website. Both champions received around five million dollars, while the runners up received two and a half million. The rest of the money is divided amongst the other players. This year was the largest prize pool in all of US Open history. In comparison, last year, the prize pool was around 75 million.
