Each week, the staff here at The Anchor give their recommendations on an album, video game and movie to enjoy. Here are our recommendations for the week of 9/28 – 10/4.
Album (May B.): Dookie by Green Day (1994)
Dookie, by Green Day, is a 90’s rock staple. This album has many hits such as “Basket Case” and “Welcome to Paradise” but has many other incredible songs that aren’t as popular. Like most of Green Day, Dookie has that dad-rock feel to it that will leave you with the kind of nostalgia you weren’t alive for. This album can make you feel transported into the 90’s with it’s classic punk rock sound.
Video Game (May B.): Hollow Knight developed by Team Cherry (2017)
Hollow Knight follows the story of a nameless knight surrounded by an “infected” abandoned kingdom. As you explore hallownest more is revealed about how this kingdom fell. The bosses in this game are difficult but very rewarding. This game will keep you hooked for hours and there is almost always more to do even when you think you beat the game.
Movie (Ella H.): Hacksaw Ridge directed by Mel Gibson (2016)
Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Desmond Doss in Hacksaw Ridge provides a unique perspective on war. As a result of religious reasons, Doss does not want to serve his country with a rifle in his hand, but rather a tourniquet. This “mostly historically accurate” movie shows Doss’s early life, bootcamp and eventually the Battle of Okinawa where Doss is a fearless medic running into a swarm of bullets to save lives. Doss teaches us the importance of bravery and being able to make a contribution even though sometimes it may not be through a traditional lens. The movie is suspenseful and heart wrenching at the same time with compassionate undertones because of Desmond Doss’s merciful mentality which is not often associated with protagonists in war movies. Hacksaw Ridge is well worth your time!
