Have you ever wished that you grew up somewhere other than where you live? The Truman Show takes this idea to the extreme. The Truman Show is a movie that shows us how people develop perspectives on the world based on what they have been exposed to all their life, even if that place happens to be a fake town on a movie set.
In The Truman Show, Truman was born and raised on a show without ever knowing. To us, his life seemed unreal, with Truman being the only person who really believed this was his life. This is because all of his friends, family, and peers were all paid actors. While this may seem obvious to us, it’s because we grew up around real people. But if we had grown up around actors, this would have seemed normal. The psychological conc
ept being explored here is perception, and how the mind is formed at a young age: what one is told as a child likely carries over for the rest of their life, and effectively forms their reality. This is why certain people have views that you would never understand since you were told something different. The movie artfully explains how every little thing in life plays a role in the development of one’s views on how they see the world. After watching The Truman Show, the viewer is left to ponder whether or not they would believe someone if they were told their world is all a fabricated lie.
